AI Films and the Audience Gap

October 17, 2026

Easier drafts, mixed reactions, and the public evidence of an audience.

Cover: a newly generated illustration using the supplied scene and Liz's character design. This is not a completed frame from 5RPS.

AI tools make it easier to turn a screenplay into a moving draft. Finding an audience is a separate problem. The useful question is how far easier production has translated into films people choose to watch, discuss and return to.

This matters to the way I am making 5RPS. I am continuing a full AI-assisted draft so I can see and hear the screenplay from beginning to end, then judge what drawing, performance, sound and funding it still needs. TEGAKI grew out of an earlier experience with AI backgrounds and the reactions around them. The production question and the audience question have stayed with me. Director commentary

The records below were checked on October 17, 2026. This article was revised on October 18. Willingness changes with the use described, and some generated films have reached paying audiences. The records examined here cannot establish sustained demand. “Audience gap” names that unresolved question, not a calculated difference between two populations. Evidence comes from surveys in Great Britain and the United States, ordinary cinema records, and a small self-selected poll. These sources answer different questions and are not combined into one audience estimate. AI-film festivals, awards and creator-community engagement are excluded from the reception evidence because their selected audiences cannot establish general acceptance.

Different meanings of making it

From making a film to sustaining an audience

  1. ProductionA film can be completed
  2. AccessPeople can find or book it
  3. ReceptionViewers respond to the work
  4. ReturnPeople choose another viewing
  5. EconomicsRevenue and costs are known
Each step needs its own evidence. Stated willingness is not observed viewing, and a cinema release does not establish repeat viewing or commercial success.

General-public surveys show both resistance and willingness

YouGov asked 5,382 adults in Great Britain whether knowing one character in a live-action film was AI-generated would change their likelihood of watching: 60% said less likely, 21% said no difference, 5% more likely, 8% were unsure and 6% said they do not watch movies. This is about one disclosed AI actor, not a fully AI-made film. YouGov GB AI actor poll

A separate Angus Reid USA survey of 2,007 adults asked about willingness to watch TV or movies made entirely by AI, and then partly by AI and partly by people. The entirely AI-made version drew 11% willing without reservations, 28% willing with reservations, 50% not willing and 11% unsure. For partly AI, partly human work, the figures were 15%, 37%, 39% and 10%. The partly AI row totals 101% because published rounded percentages are retained. Angus Reid AI entertainment poll

The task also changes the answer. YouGov's separate October 2–5, 2025 survey of 1,106 U.S. adult citizens reported 61% accepting AI visual effects, against 18% accepting an entire film made without human actors or writers. Its reported margin of error was ±4 percentage points. This is acceptability, not willingness to watch, and is not a trend comparison with the later Angus Reid question. YouGov poll tables

A small poll on a software-engineering page

A poll on an older Remote Startup Senpai page, built for a software-engineering audience, asked for reactions to a Seedance animation reel made from a manually drawn layout. The exact question was ‘thoughts on AI slop?’

Remote Startup Senpai poll asking thoughts on AI slop, showing 89% please no, 8% okay if entertaining, 3% no different from daily Claude Code use, and 150 responses.

Cinema bookings, reception and money

Bookings, admissions and reception answer different questions. Each case keeps its finding visible and its dated exact record available below. Small platform aggregates are source records, not audience statistics.

generAIdoscope AI/hybrid UPLINK Producer Filmarks

Japan, August 29, 2025. UPLINK archive and later distribution through 3 services.

Takeaway: a low displayed average and a divided first-page sample. Praise for the experiment coexists with story and execution criticism. Admissions and profit remain unknown.

Reception and receipts record

Filmarks: 2.5/5. Total review count was not exposed in captured page text. The first page showed 10 review cards, 9 scored from 1.0–5.0. Two scores were 4.8 and 5.0, seven were 2.8 or lower. These sample values are not sentiment percentages.

怪奇!死肉の男 AI/hybrid Official film site Theater Seven Eiga.com

68-minute Hideshi Hino adaptation directed by Takeshi Sone. Theater Seven: September 19–25, 2026, standard adult ticket ¥1,900.

Takeaway: six self-selected reviews, too few and too selected to characterize an audience. The two sampled reviews praise the experiment or story and criticize execution. Attendance and revenue remain unknown.

Reception and receipts record

Eiga.com: 3.4/5 across 6 reviews. Two visible full reviews are mixed: one values the experiment but notes a bloodless AI-script feel; one praises the mortality story but flags AI image and voice limits.

Love You (Kannada, 2025) AI/hybrid Times of India The Week BookMyShow Cinema Express

Kannada generated feature, released May 16, 2025.

Takeaway: qualified criticism and a two-vote platform record. These do not establish an audience consensus. About ₹10 lakh in reported AI-tool licensing is not a full budget. Profit is unknown.

Reception and receipts record

The Times of India critic: 2.5/5. BookMyShow: 7.4/10 from 2 votes and 2 reviews. The relationship between the aggregate and individual cards was not established. A separate Cinema Express critic called it a bold but flawed first step.

Post Truth / Gerçek Ötesi AI/hybrid Box Office Türkiye

Turkish generated documentary with recorded ticket sales.

Takeaway: a measured theatrical audience and divided criticism. No audience-rating aggregate found. Costs and revenue split are unknown. OrtaKoltuk Öteki Sinema

Reception and receipts record

Box Office Türkiye: opening weekend 524 admissions, ₺136,764 gross; 9-week total 1,983 admissions, ₺405,164 gross. Two critics disagree: OrtaKoltuk faults repetition and didacticism; Öteki Sinema praises the form and argument but finds the sensory flow tiring.

Man in Hanbok AI/hybrid Cine21 KOFIC

Korea, May 21, 2026. Cine21 records 647 admissions.

Three critics are not a representative audience survey or a measure of audience approval.

Reception and receipts record

Three critics gave 4, 6 and 3 out of 10. These are three attributed judgments.

Run to the West AI/hybrid KOFIC streaming report

Live action with AI effects, rather than a predominantly generated anime.

A different production category. No evidence isolating the reason people watched.

Reception and receipts record

KOFIC reports about 28K theatrical admissions and 5 consecutive days at number 1 on a subscription service in Korea.

These records show uneven reception. Post Truth records 1,983 admissions over nine weeks; the live-action hybrid Run to the West has a larger reported audience of about 28K. Admissions measure attendance, not approval. Small platform records for generAIdoscope, 怪奇!死肉の男 and Love You contain favorable and unfavorable responses. No title supplies the share of all viewers who liked it. A ticket price without admissions supplies no gross, and gross without costs supplies no profit.

What appeared under eight theatrical trailers

On October 17, 2026, I recorded visible counters and up to the first ten non-uploader, top-level comments shown by default under eight ordinary theatrical trailers: five AI/hybrid productions and three artist-animated films. No replies were expanded. I coded each displayed comment by its expressed response: positive for praise, anticipation or support, negative for criticism or rejection, mixed for both, and other for questions, predictions, jokes or unclear/off-topic remarks. This convenience sample is not representative of the general public and does not match countries, genres, ages or budgets. Trailer UI records Trailer comment coding

The useful part of this collection is the coexistence of different arguments. Love You attracted encouragement for a Kannada filmmaking experiment as well as criticism of the images. ChaO attracted criticism of voices and design as well as praise for voice performances. These are examples of expressed reactions, not a test of which production method audiences prefer. A comment praising an attempt does not necessarily endorse the finished feature. Silence does not establish indifference or approval. Trailer comments are separate from feature reviews and admissions. ChaO official site Last Blossom official site Trailer UI records Trailer comment coding

Can an external tool verify the audience?

The dated third-party checker experiment

The free VideoTrends public-channel checker was tried on October 17, 2026. It returned low-comment and unusually high-view flags in one channel check. The high-view outlier flag also appeared in an artist-animation school channel check. These are vendor screening rules over different upload windows and content mixes, not verified film-specific audience findings. No fake-view percentage was established. VideoTrends checker

How to read this evidence

This is a bounded descriptive inquiry, not a systematic review or a causal study. It connects accessible surveys, cinema records and selected public reactions available in the October 17 search. The cases were not selected randomly or declared before searching. Their inclusion documents access to a source, not their representativeness. Missing evidence remains missing.

Search boundaries, definitions and limits of inference

Selection and source types. General-public attitude evidence is limited to the linked GB and US surveys. Cinema cases are selected accessible releases, not a census of generated films. Exhibitors document bookings, while producer statements supply attributed production claims. Platform pages document displayed records, and industry reports supply attributed admissions or rankings. Critics' and users' texts are individual reception evidence. The Instagram screenshot and approximate reel totals are author-supplied. AI-film festivals and creator-community selections do not enter the general-public inference here. This exclusion defines scope, and does not make the other selected reception cases representative. This article does not provide a complete search-query log, so another researcher cannot treat this as an exhaustive search.

Production definitions. AI/hybrid is a broad source-based description, not a percentage of generated footage or proof of authorship. Predominantly generated imagery is distinct from Run to the West's live-action/AI-effects approach. Artist-animated identifies the documented visual approach of the comparison titles, without certifying every tool as AI-free. No production category is treated as a quality score.

Survey units. N is the publisher's total respondent count. YouGov US used opt-in panel web interviews and weighting, with a publisher-reported ±4-point margin adjusted for weighting. The five selected questions have unweighted item bases of 1,102 (subtitles), 1,102 (effects), 1,106 (human script, AI visuals/sound), 1,101 (entire film without human actors/writers) and 1,104 (all actors replaced). Total N=1,106 should not be read as an identical denominator for every item. Angus Reid Q20 is a hypothetical willingness grid with entirely-AI and partly-AI/human categories. It is not a randomized disclosure experiment or a matched viewing test. The questions, dates and countries differ, so their percentages cannot form a trend or isolate disclosure from film quality. Published rounded numbers are retained. YouGov poll tables Angus Reid questionnaire Angus Reid tables

Comment units and coding. The October 17 YouTube capture retained at most ten default-ranked top-level non-uploader comments per verified trailer, without expanding replies. The unit is a surfaced comment, not a person, viewer or ticket buyer. Praise, anticipation or support was coded positive, criticism or rejection negative, both mixed, and questions, predictions, jokes or unclear/off-topic text other. The coding has no independently measured intercoder reliability. Ranking, translation, sarcasm and praise for technical novelty can affect interpretation. The CSV preserves captured values, including approximate K counts. Love You's corrected sample-like median is 3. A median of selected comment likes divided by total video views joins different units and cannot estimate approval or authenticity. No population percentages, confidence intervals or significance tests are inferred from these convenience samples. Trailer UI records

Reviews, attendance and economics. Platform aggregates remain attributed dated displays, with unknown aggregation rules where not documented. Six self-selected reviews, two votes and three critics cannot describe the audience as a population. More self-selected reviews alone would not fix the sampling problem. Admissions are entries, not necessarily distinct people or approving viewers. Gross is reported ticket revenue, not profit. A streaming rank is not a count of viewers. Costs, marketing exposure, exhibitor/distributor shares, completion and repeat viewing are generally unavailable here.

Confounds and inference. Countries, languages, genres, resources, release ages, distributors, uploaders, promotion and platform ranking differ. No groups are pooled to estimate an AI effect. Stated willingness, selected reception and paid attendance are kept separate. This collection cannot establish that AI use caused any reaction, that a technical weakness caused poor attendance, or that sustained demand is absent everywhere. Japan-specific population attitudes, owner-authorized viewing/purchase cohorts and full economics remain future research questions.

What the record can answer

The questions behind the search
QuestionSupported answerOpen question
Is public interest limited to specialist groups?Surveys in Great Britain and the United States report both resistance and sizable minorities willing to watch, depending on the question.Whether these stated intentions lead to completed viewing, payment or repeat viewing.
Has a generated feature reached paying audiences?Yes. Actual cinema bookings and ticket sales are documented above.A strong-reception, commercially successful feature precedent was not established by this set of records.
Do people actually watch and return? The survey results are stated intentions. Cinema records document attendance for a few releases. This search did not establish representative completion, purchase or repeat-viewing evidence for mainstream AI-made features.
Do these results describe all countries? The surveys cited here cover Great Britain and the United States. They do not establish views in Japan or globally.
Can willingness be treated as demand? No. The surveys measure stated attitudes or willingness, not behavior. The records examined here do not establish sustained mainstream demand for AI-made features.

The surveys show substantial resistance alongside a sizable willing minority. They do not measure completed viewing, purchases or repeat viewing. This search did not establish sustained mainstream demand for AI-made features, and does not establish its absence elsewhere. The cinema records and self-selected poll add context, but cannot fill those gaps or support a conclusion about Japan or global audiences.

Why TEGAKI, and why keep building 5RPS

Released TEGAKI cover showing its characters and production imagery.
TEGAKI, the completed 10-minute 35-second short, made with Jayson (Json) Cunanan. Watch TEGAKI

I made TEGAKI after working with artists on an earlier 5RPS trailer and encountering the response to AI-assisted backgrounds. Consent, creative work and friendship became the short's subject. The longer account is in the director commentary. Director commentary

5RPS is still being built as a complete AI-assisted draft so the screenplay can be seen, heard and judged from beginning to end. The result can show what still needs better animation, performance, sound or funding. The aim is to finish it and put it out there. A finished draft might eventually help secure support for a version made with professional artists. That support and the final production method remain undecided.

Research note: sources and earlier observations checked October 17, 2026. AI assisted searching and organization, followed by source checking and editing. Ratings, creator claims, admissions and private-page observations are attributed separately. Other productions' private analytics and finances were not inspected. The cover is a newly generated Liz illustration, not a completed 5RPS frame.
